Random Thoughts: Black Mirror

Mastodon

2023-07-01: In the "Black Mirror" episode "Beyond the Sea" (S6, E3), astronauts on a deep space mission get R&R by periodically transferring their consciousness to replicas on Earth. If this technology exists, why wouldn't NASA use it the other way around, sending replicas into space and keeping the humans safe on Earth, except when needed in space?

2023-07-03: Life would be easier to figure out if it were accompanied by melodramatic music like in bad movies.

2023-07-03: I'm reminded of when I taught high school in Australia in 1976. I told my students that in honor of the upcoming American bicentennial, there would be no school on July 4. An initial burst of excitement was quicky followed by irritation when they realized July 4, 1976, fell on a Sunday.

2023-07-05: The City of Richardson's standard practice for holidays is to cancel trash pickup and shift recycling pickup by a day. This is nice, but it only confuses residents, many of whom put trash out with recycling. I support the City giving workers the holiday off and not schedule them to make up recycling collections on the day before or after. Give workers a break and keep it simple for residents to remember.

2023-07-05: Thanks to the radical right's campaign against "woke" corporations, for the first time in more than two decades, the country has a new No. 1 beer, Modelo Especial. Irony abounds.

2023-07-05:
July 3: "World registers hottest day ever recorded."
July 4: "Hold my beer."
July 5: "Count me in."
You'd think Americans might see a pattern and want to take actions against a future like this. You'd think wrong.

2023-07-08: At City of Richardson's open house for new City Hall design plan, feedback was...mixed. When asked if they wanted a design that's compatible with the Public Library (which is brutalist architecture), the public was heavily in favor. When shown pictures of sample buildings, the Brutalist building examples received the lowest votes in favor.

2023-07-08: @tristansnell, someone really ought to catch that toddler.

2023-07-12: "In a first, Texas is no longer a Top State for Business."
I'm not surprised. Texas business-friendly GOP has been taken over by culture warriors.

2023-07-13: "Floods, fires and deadly heat are the alarm bells of a planet on the brink."
Meanwhile, in GOP news...

2023-07-13: Actors Guild goes on strike. You can see what they're seriously worried about in this 25 year old tv commercial made a decade after Fred Astaire's death.

2023-07-17: "In 2019, the homicide rate was up 11 percent from 2014, and slightly higher than in 2018, then jumped another 29 percent in 2020, the biggest single-year increase in a century. The rate rose by 4 percent in 2021 "then, just as suddenly, it began to decline, a downward slope that prevailed through 2022."

Thanks, Joe.

2023-07-25: @smilingdemon, you are willing to grant CafePress "a nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty free, fully paid-up, transferable, sublicensable, perpetual, irrevocable license to reproduce, distribute copies of, prepare derivative works based upon, publicly perform, publicly display, ..., and otherwise use and exploit Your Content" but you draw the line at "train artificial intelligence on"? Why is that?

2023-07-28: Trump's fundraising emails aren't even trying to answer the legal charges against him. Instead, he invents nefarious motives for why the Justice Department might want to prosecute people who fail to protect confidential information. He says, the "Deep State...want to send a message, that for CENTURIES on out, America will ONLY ever be ruled by their approved puppet candidates."

2023-07-28: "2 Southlake police officers terminated over drawing of swastika, chief says."
Southlake. Because, of course.

2023-07-31: "Dallas County Judge concerned over Texas leaving ERIC. Dallas County Judge 'not very confident' voter rolls will be clean after Texas exits multistate voter program." -- wfaa.com
It makes no sense. It's almost as if the Texas GOP was trying to encourage voter fraud. Imagine the outcry from them if it were Dems doing this.
