Charter Review in Dallas

Source: City of Dallas

The City of Richardson is due for a Charter Review this year. It's a once-in-a-decade process. Likely, a Charter Review Commission will be formed, including members of the public. It's not too soon for members of the public to start doing homework to ensure the public interest is served. A good place to start looking is at the city to our south. A Dallas Charter Review Commission is in process of gathering and winnowing recommendations for charter amendments for that city. The Dallas Morning News has an update on its progress.

Judging by the proposed amendments, the Dallas Commission seems to want to empower voters. The Commission may recommend ranked-choice voting for Mayor and City Council. It could recommend a lower threshold for petitions to change city laws. It could expand eligibility to serve on boards and commissions. Another proposal is moving municipal elections from May to November. Not all of these proposals will make into the commission's final recommendations. Not all will be accepted by the Dallas City Council for inclusion in an election by the voters of Dallas for a final decision. But what the voters will be asked to consider begins with this commission. Richardson citizens should be paying attention and planning for Richardson's own charter review.

"Dallas leads the way.
Charter amendments in play.
Richardson should learn."
