Random Thoughts: Washington Post Layoffs

Mastodon

2026-02-04: From NY Times: "Washington Post Begins Laying Off More Than 300 Journalists."
Two things.
1. My decision last year to cancel my Washingtpon Post subscription is aging well.
2. Why is it that bad news about a newspaper is never in the newspaper itself, but in a competitor's newspaper?

2026-02-04: Headline: "Trump administration to withdraw 700 immigration agents from Minnesota."
Good, but make sure they send back the ones responsible for Renee Good and Alex Pretti's deaths to stand trial.

2026-02-13: Trump pardons NFL players convicted of drug trafficking. He pardons president of Honduras for trafficking 400 tons of cocaine. Yet when he kidnaps Venezuelan president Maduro, Atty Gen. Pam Bondi says that he “will soon face the full wrath of American justice.” Make it make sense.

2026-02-16: The EPA rejected the scientific finding that greenhouse gases threaten human well being. It means the EPA can no longer regulate emissions from cars and power plants.
At the same time, HHS is trying to overturn the FDA's Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) rule so it can start regulating thousands of ingredients in everyday food on supermarket shelves.
Make it make sense.

2026-02-22: The Olympics gives me a new way of looking at sports. The New England Patriots should be seen as winning the Super Bowl Silver Medal. Sounds better than calling them losers. Nah.

2026-02-27: "AI-related spending now contributes more to the nation’s GDP growth than all consumer spending combined, and by another calculation, those AI expenditures accounted for 92 percent of GDP growth during the first half of 2025."
The article's title: "Here’s How the AI Crash Happens" - The Atlantic

2026-02-28: The Forever War flares up...again. Regime change worked so well in Afghanistan and Iraq that Trump adopts the strategy as well. It's all he knows how to do.

2026-02-28: Trump pledges to continue attacks on Iran until the threat of the Epstein files is "obliterated."
