Oscar Snubs and Surprises

Oscar nominations were announced January 23, 2018, and as usual there were some snubs and surprises. I happened to see more than my usual number of movies this year before the Oscars are handed out on March 4, so naturally I have some strong opinions.

Movies that made my own personal Top Ten list are below, in no particular order.

Of those, five were nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. These were the movies Oscar got right: The Shape of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, The Post, Darkest Hour, Lady Bird.

The other four nominees weren't in my Top Ten list. These are the surprises. Two just missed my top ten list, so they aren't big surprises: Dunkirk, Get Out. And two I haven't seen yet so I'll reserve judgment on whether they are really surprises or not: Call Me by Your Name, Phantom Thread.

Five movies in my Top Ten list were not nominated. These are the snubs: Mudbound, Wonder, The Big Sick, mother!, Battle of the Sexes.

Note that I wasn't predicting which movies would get Oscar nominations, only which movies I would pick if I had a vote. My personal Top Ten list, in no particular order (preliminary -- remember there are two nominees I haven't seen yet):

  • The Post
  • Mudbound
  • Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri
  • The Shape of Water
  • Darkest Hour
  • mother!
  • Battle of the Sexes
  • Wonder
  • Lady Bird
  • The Big Sick

Steve Benson, I haven't seen Detroit or The Florida Project. It's possible one or both could sneak into my Top Ten list. I've now seen "Phantom Thread." It's good, but it doesn't make my Top Ten list. I've also now seen "Call Me by Your Name." That one is really problematical. It doesn't make my Top Ten list, either.
