Althou...maybe the best blog I have seen you write. Although the first time I read it, I didn't see the "f" so it caught me a bit by surprise. I do believe the reason there was no mention of the racial/segregation aspect is it was not considered. Our track record is such that, if followed, shows it is just not important. what you have stated is 100% correct. Our elementary schools are the most segregated, then the junior highs, then the high schools.

This is why it would have made total sense to increase the number of board members to 8, and to have a board member representing each junior high area. Instead, we went to a great deal of trouble to gerrymander the "districts" to include a large white portion in each district, which is the group that votes (except of course Hamilton Park which was the center of the lawsuit). Then we added two "at large" board members for good measure. Had each area been properly represented, bonds would have had a better chance of seeing use in the lower grades, which are the most important. Instead, bonds are consistently spent disproportionately at the high school level. (60 million on indoor athletic facilities vs. upgrading elementary schools in disrepair) The flat to decrease in education performance over the last 10 years is a testament to this. Instead of ushering in a 2020 style of political infrastructure that would naturally support education for all, we rearranged the chairs and came out with essentially the same result. what a shame. The legacy of this school board will last for generations.

-- Bryan Holland, RHS class of 75 (because it says i am unknown. :) )Bryan hollandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13976928121673396770noreply@blogger.com
