As for the transition plan, it has received little or no public discussion. All the RISD has said so far is that they are asking the judge to allow postponement of the May election until November to allow for the transition to single-member district voting. That seems reasonable to me. I'm sure I'll have more to say later about the full transition later.Mark Stegerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02376182294736839659noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2498525082522582900.post-27472792274751580182019-02-01T10:55:23.365-06:002019-02-01T10:55:23.365-06:00I don't particularly have a problem with singl...I don't particularly have a problem with single member districts or the map. What bothers me is the attempt by the RISD with the approval of the federal judge to extend the terms of the 3 trustees whose terms end in May. Mrs. Clardy, Mr. Linn, and Mrs. Patterson were elected by the voters to serve terms ending in May 2019, NOT November 2019. An election should be held in May 2019. I hope the judge does not allow the terms to be extended in a non-democratic fashion. If they put education for all (defined by me as being able to read, understand what you read and do basic arithmetic) as the highest priority for the district then this will be a benefit. I'm leaning toward hoping all the seats are up for election in November although I know that isn't what the BOT favors.

I haven't forgotten that they repeatedly promised to get all students to grade level in three years if the TRE passed. I know that was a rash promise and they were careful to keep it verbal in the meetings, but it speaks to character.

Marcia Grau

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10636095311119311357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2498525082522582900.post-81682617202574793142019-01-31T15:55:36.416-06:002019-01-31T15:55:36.416-06:00"Federal law generally requires integrated sc..."Federal law generally requires integrated school districts. But the settlement of this lawsuit requires drawing election districts that segregate minorities into majority-minority districts. There is bound to be tension between the school attendance boundaries that can pass muster with federal integration law and the new voting district boundaries that are trying to achieve, let's be honest, the opposite of integration."
Mr Steger identifies the dilemma of political cartography that plagues any SMD plan. Majority- minority districts do facilitate the election of a minority Trustee. But oftentimes assuring such is interpreted to indicate "packing" which is the practice of drafting all minority citizens into one or two districts. That is why I suggest there will probably be further litigation or USDOJ intervention in this RISD SMD affair.
Brian Marks, Richardson Heights Parkbmarks56@aol.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12065925914064836672noreply@blogger.com
